Back to the zoo a few days ago, I found this scene which made me think of my own family.

Here was this beautiful female Oran Utan, who was perched on top of a man-made station. She was motionless for a long time, despite other co-inhabitants moving about freely around her.

I was happy, as she would make a perfect subject, so I started to shoot her with my camera.

I was mersmerized by her, as I saw through the lens, as she made perfect eye contact. It was at that same time that a small head popped up at the bottom of the screen. There was her infant Orang Utan on her lap, who was sleeping till then, and just woken up. Click. Click. Click.

As I finished clicking, it dawned on me, as to why she was motionless for such a long time. She was being a bed for her beautiful baby. Whether its humans or animals, I think mothers get comfortably numb for the sake of their kids. Hats off to them.

Extra Info: Founded in the 16th century by Nirartha, a Hindu priest who was travelling through Bali. One day he saw a shining light, came to the coast and found it shining from the fresh water spring. The locals disagreed. He meditated and pushed a chunk of rock out into the sea, which the temple now stands on. He dedicated the temple to the God of the Sea, and ever since people have treated this as very special.

Ramayana is the Java's finest example of storytelling in stone in which the epic is egrved on the wall of Siwa Temple in the complex of Prambanan sanctuaries. Prambanan's version of the Ramayana differs somewhat from the original Indian epic, reflecting the adaptation to Javanese sensibilities over the centuries.

The story and all things about Ramayana (and other related story) moved to Bali same as when Hindu's people escaped when Majapahit Kingdom was destructed. That's why Javanese culture still have relationship with the Balinese one.

the full story of Ramayana can you read here (http://www.yogyes.com/en/yogyakarta-cultural-performance/sendratari-ramayana/)

Endangered Sumatran tiger body parts sold openly in Indonesia

Hides and bones of endangered Sumatran tigers are sold openly in Indonesia for traditional medicines and jewelry, an environmental group said in a report published Wednesday.

The Britain-based wildlife monitoring network TRAFFIC, said tiger body parts, including canine teeth, claws, fur, whiskers and bones were on sale in 10 percent of the 326 retail outlets surveyed during 2006 in 28 cities and towns across Sumatra,

Based on the number of teeth on sale, the group estimated that 23 tigers were killed to supply the products sold by goldsmiths, souvenir and antique shops and traditional Chinese pharmacies.

The number declined the group's previous survey in 1999-2002, when estimated 52 tigers were killed.

"Sadly, the decline in availability appears to be due to the dwindling number of tigers left in the wild," said Julia Ng, TRAFFIC's program officer for South-East Asia.

All of TRAFFIC's surveys indicated that Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, and Pancur Batu, about 15 kilometres away, are the main hubs for the trade in tiger parts.

The population of the Sumatra tiger, or Panthera tigris sumatrae, is estimated to be less than 500, Ng said. It is classified as critically endangered on the IUCN-World Conservation Union's list of the world's most-threatened species.

"Successive surveys continue to show that Sumatran tigers are being sold body part by body part into extinction", said Susan Lieberman, Director of WWF International's Species Programme.

"This is an enforcement crisis," Lieberman told DPA. "If Indonesian authorities need enforcement help from the international community they should ask for it. If not, they should demonstrate they are taking enforcement seriously."

Tonny Soehartono, director for biodiversity conservation at the Indonesian ministry of forestry, said efforts were being made to deal with the illgal wildlife trade.

"We have to deal with the trade. Currently we are facing many other crucial problems which, unfortunately, are causing the decline of Sumatran Tiger populations," Soehartono said.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono pledged a 10-year effort to protect the Sumatran tiger during last year's conference on climate change in Bali Island.

Sumatra's remaining few tigers are also under threat from rampant deforestation by the pulp and paper and palm oil industries. The report warned that "unless tackled immediately," the combined threats of habitat loss and illegal trade will be the "death knell" for Indonesian tigers.

In the 1990s, the tourism industry in Bali boomed. Many Balinese became rich during this period. But farmers, the traditional upholders of the Balinese economy, became poorer. Costs of agricultural production and the cost of living went up, and the price of agricultural products, especially rice, rose very little. Farmers turned to other work, usually in tourism-related sectors, to make a living. Farmland was converted to other (usually tourism-related) uses. Young people were more attracted to the glamorous prospects offered by tourism than the hard work, dirty clothes and poor pay of farming.

The bombs in Kuta in October 2002 were not the end of tourism, but they were the beginning of the end of the fantasy, blindly held through the boom-years, that tourism was a sustainable long-term base for the Balinese economy. In the wake of the bomb, some advocated a more diversified and sustainable economic base. Many realised that agriculture had been forgotten - or at least marginalised - and that it should perhaps be reinstated at the centre of Balinese culture and economy. Some policy makers suggested developing agro-industri and agri-bisnis to compete in the global market.

The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis), called "Ora" in its native Indonesia, is the largest living lizard. Males reach a length of 10 feet and a weight of 200 pounds. These lizards occupy the small East Indian islands of Komodo, Rintja and Padar and nearby islets; they also live on part of the large island of Flores. Considered an endangered species, the Komodo Dragon is protected by Indonesian law.

Komodo Island, as seen in this exhibit, is largely grass-covered. For most of the year no rain falls and, except for scattered palms, trees grow mostly at high elevations or along stream beds. Young dragons spend much time in trees and eat insects and smaller lizards, wheras older dragons become too large to climb, and feed on the ground. Large dragons ambust their prey along game trails or actively seek it out. They kill wild pigs, deer and even water buffaloes and horses, but carrion is an important sorce of food.

The lizards in this exhibit were collected by the W. Douglas Burden Expedition to the Indonesian Island of Komodo in 1926.

The dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History's Hall of Reptiles and Amphibians, with their precise depictions of geographical locations and the careful, anatomically correct mounting of the specimens, are windows onto a world of animals, their behavior, and their habitats. Moreover, since many of the environments represented have been exploited or degraded, some dioramas preserve places and animals as they no longer exist.

Just outside of Yogyakarta in Indonesia are the ruins of Prambanan. Getting to this place is a long way from home, so we tried to take advantage of everything in and around the city. Prambanan is a Hindu temple that was first built in 850 CE. It began a painstaking reconstruction in 1918. I can't imagine what difficult work that must be.

Actually, it was quite nice to get out of the crowded city. Will and I had spent a long night walking around down near the markets. The streets were so crowded in the busy night streets that it was unbelievable. I had always known that Indonesia had hundreds of millions of people, but when stuck in the throngs, you can really feel it. Also, that was a disconcerting night because it was the first time I stepped over a dead body.
